This 10x zoom ratio lens covers a wide range of focal lengths from 50mm standard to 500mm ultra telephoto. Its advanced optical design is optimized for digital SLR cameras. The super coating on each glass surface reduces flare and ghosting while providing superb color rendition. Four pieces of Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass correct color aberration throughout the entire zoom range.
HSM versions of this lens (available only for AF Canon, Nikon, Four Thirds and Sigma Mounts) provide quiet high-speed AF function as well as full time manual focus capability. An ergonomically designed magnesium tripod mount is easy to grip and carry and helps reduce total weight of the lens. The rear focus mechanism allows the use of circular polarizing filters and a custom bayonet "petal-type" lens hood since the front barrel does not rotate during focusing or zooming. This lens also has Sigma's zoom lock device to prevent "zoom creep" when the lens is tilted down.
By adding an optional APO teleconverter (sold separately), you can use this lens as a 140-700, f/7.3-8.8 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or as a 200-1000mm f/10.4-12.6 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 2X teleconverter. (Teleconverters can be used in 100mm – 500mm focal length range)
