Calumet backgrounds are constructed from 65% cotton/poly blend muslin. They are hand painted with an acrylic-based paint. They are not flame retardant. Backgrounds should not be machine-washed or dry-cleaned. Care should also be taken not to get the background wet. You may notice some rub off on your hands during handling. This is normal and will eventually diminish. We recommend spraying the background lightly with a fabric protectant spray. Wait until the first coat is entirely dry and then spray again. This not only helps with cleaning up dirt and spills but also helps to stabilize the curing dust mentioned in the above paragraph. Allow the background to dry thoroughly before using or storing.
Random wrinkle patterns on backgrounds are very attractive and may be achieved by unfolding the background and stuffing it into a background bag for a while. If a smooth background is preferred, a steamer may be used with caution not to saturate the background. This could cause the colors to run. Ironing is also an option, however, we suggest covering the ironing board before ironing the background to prevent color from rubbing off onto the ironing board.
