In honor of its 25th anniversary, this is the first book devoted to the International Center of Photography's outstanding and diverse collection. While the selection displays great strength in documentary photography and photojournalism, there is also a wide range of fine art, commercial and vernacular photography. Presented are works by such masters as Richard Avedon, Weegee, Cindy Sherman, Robert Capa, Dorothea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Margaret Bourke-White, Ansel Adams, Irving Penn and other lesser-known and anonymous photographers.
An interpretive essay by ICP curator Ellen Handy describes the philosophy and history of the ICP collection, which includes everything from still lifes and body fragments to style and fashion, interiors, cities and urban encounters, landscapes, war and disaster, everyday life and portraits. Distinguished writers Anne Hollander, Diane Johnson, Ann Lauterbach and Charles Simic enhance the book with eloquent insights surrounding several of the book's themes. Completing the volume are photographer's biographies, which make it a valuable reference work.
