Perfect Stereo Through a Unique X/Y Mic Design

The H4n’s onboard X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization with no phase shifting. Frequency response remains uniform throughout your recording. The result is great stereo recording with natural depth and accurate imaging every time.

The mics also adjust for variable recording patterns at either 90° or 120°. The versatile design allows user rotation of each mic capsule from 90 (standard) to 120 degree (wide-angle) stereo to cover any recording situation.

Four Channel Performance for Audio and Video Applications

The Zoom  H4n is the only handheld recorder that allows simultaneously four channel  recording, using the onboard mics along with  other external mics or direct inputs. The built-in mixer blends the channels to produce rich sounding, perfectly balanced recordings

The Zoom H4n is ideal for media and filmmakers, allowing for easy to record “high definition” audio at 24-bit/48kHz through boom, handheld or lavalier mics while gathering atmospheric audio with the onboard mics. Recordings support Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) specifications, so each file is time stamped. User defined markers and cue points can be set in both recording and playback modes.

For added versatility, the Mid-Side stereo decoder converts the mid and side channels of the Zoom H4n to the classic, conventional left/right stereo signal

Built-in Preamp for Precise Results

The four channel recording and unique mic design works in conjunction with a digitally controlled, high-quality preamplifier.  The result is precise audio that rivals recording in a world-class studio. The preamp also allows for on the fly recording level adjustments, plus a built-in automatic level setting function that quickly optimizes levels based on a specific situation.

High resolution, 24-bit/96kHz linear PCM Recording to SD / SDHC Cards

The versatility of the Zoom H4n allows the user to choose up to 24-bit/96-kHz linear PCM WAV files for audio resolution for maximum results that surpasses DVD quality.  When smaller files for maximum recording time is desired, choose from a variety of MP3 formats from 320 kbps down to 48 kpbs for web or e-mail distribution.

Audio files are captured on to compact SD or for high-capacity tasks SDHC memory cards,  One SDHC 32GB  card can capture over 15 hours of recording time at 24-bit/96kHz. When using the MP3 format, capture over 550 hours of recording time at 128 kpbs.

Audio Capability for DSLR HD video

The H4n offers four channel recording capabilities for DSLR HD video projects. Expand beyond on camera sound options by combining a boom mic with its Channel 1 XLR input, a wireless lavaliere on its Channel 2 XLR and the onboard mics, all at once for incredible stereo imaging.  The H4n's internal clock is ideal for both DSLR camera operators and film editors, with extreme precision that ensures no drift when dealing with short clips. The audio and video sync for longer shots can also be achieved using most major brand video editing software.

Shock Resistant Durability and Fast File Transfer

The Zoom H4n features a rubberized, shock resistant chassis not only  improves durability, but also minimizes noise during handling. The  large, 1.9 inch backlit  LCD screen graphic display shows all tracking information at a glance, with easy navigation of all front function buttons.  Review audio files quickly and easily through optional stereo headphones, or use the a built-in reference speaker. For long recording, the Stamina mode can be set which can extend battery life to 11 hours ( in 16-bit/44.1kHz linear PCM format).
