The Canon PowerShot G1 X narrows the gap between compact and DSLR cameras, with advanced features normally exclusive with the Canon EOS models. The PowerShot G1 X combines a specially designed 14 megapixel sensor and DIGIC 5 processor to create the High-Sensitivity (HS) System that delivers excellent image quality, along with greater creative control.
Canon HS SYSTEM Combines a 14.3 MP High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 Image Processor
The PowerShot G1 X features a specially designed APS-C sized sensor. Though similar to sensors found in the EOS line, it was developed with larger pixel sites which allow more light to be captured, resulting in premium mage quality well beyond any previous compact camera. The High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor is exclusive to the PowerShot G1 X, and is 6.3 times larger that the previous one found in the G12.
The 1.5 inch, 14.3 megapixel sensor delivers rich and precise resolution at low ISO speeds, plus reduced noise with low light capture and higher ISO settings up to 12800. Backround blur options that were once limited to a DSLR camera can also be achieved with the PowerShot G1 X.
EOS Level Features for the Ultimate in Creative Control
View potential shots high and low, and from any angle with the 3.0-inch Vari-Angle LCD screen, which swivels out, rotates and tilts up and down. The 922,000 dots reveal a high level of detail with a full spectrum for true and natural color. For those who want to shoot the PowerShot G1 X like an SLR, the real image optical viewfinder delivers the same features of the LCD, with the addition of an adjustable diopter.
The Electronic Level can be used to calculate the horizontal angle of tilt, conveniently displayed on the LCD screen to insure a level shot every time.
The PowerShot G1 X features a full range of shooting and recording modes including 14-bit RAW + JPEG. The 14-bit signal processing is used in the EOS cameras, and produce images that are notably rich in detail and with a smooth gradation.
The 14-bit processing offers a 4x increase in RAW data when compared to 12-bit, to deliver rich highlight and shadow detail and a smoother, more natural tonal gradation. For increased creative control, RAW images can be edited to a photographer's exact specifications using the bundled software. The PowerShot G1 X can also be set to capture images simultaneouslyin RAW and JPEG .
The PowerShot G1 X also features a full manual mode for additional user control. The streamlined, EOS style design features a bi-level dial for setting the shooting mode and exposure compensation. A second electronic dial located in front allows for easy access to the camera options, including step zoom settings.
High-Speed Burst HQ takes advantage of the increased processing speed and power of the DIGIC 5 Image Processor, including capture of fast action stills. Shoot continuous at full resolution, up to a maximum of 6 shots in a single burst
High Dynamic Range (HDR) capture is also possible, where the PowerShot G1 X captures three exposures in succession, then combines them to create a single image.
Canon UA Lens Technology with Superb Engineering
The PowerShot G1 X features a fast and precise 28mm lens (35mm equivalent: 28-112mm) with a 4x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom, designed to take advantage of the exceptionally large sensor. The f/2.8 opening covers a full range of shooting situations, and is ideal for low light, all while including even the most subtle details. The Canon UA lens technology utilizes a molded glass and aspherical element design that suppresses lens aberration, resulting in outstanding image quality throughout the entire lens range.
Also featured is advanced Optical Image Stabilization, with Intelligent IS that analyzes and incorporates the best correction based on each still and video shooting situation. This feature alows the user to concentrate on the subject while the camera applies the best settings to insure a proper capture.
Capture Full 1080p HD Video with Stereo Sound
The HS System also allows the PowerShot G1 X to produce crisp and clear Full 1080 HD video with stereo sound at near 24 frames per second, and 720p at near 30 frames per second.
The dedicated movie button allows for a one touch stop and start – no menus or additional switches required. Access to the full optical zoom range during video capture is available, while an electronic wind filter suppresses noise that can affect the audio.
Share Video Capture and Highlights
Create a highlight video of any gathering or important event with Movie Digest. During a still shot capture, the PowerShot G1 X will automatically activate a four second video clip. The collection of clips will then be combined into a single VGA (640 x 480) video at 30 frames per second.
Share final video captures directly from the PowerShot G1 X to any HDTV using an HDMI cable. Additional playback control from a TV remote is possible when connected to compatible HDMI-CEC devices.
For captures designed streictly for computer use, video can also be captured for the Apple iFrame format. The smaller file sizes speed up file transfer and editing, while providing a more convenient method of video upload or e-mail attachment. The iFrame format avoids time-consuming and image degrading conversions, and enjoys native support for compatible Mac and PC video applications
Canon Speedlite Compatability
The PowerShot G1 X hot shoe allows access to select Canon Speedlite flash units including the 270EX, 320EX and Macro Ring Light MR-14EX (adapter required). Use the 270EX for basic tasks, the 320EX for both flash and video with the built in LED light and the Macro Ring Light MR-14EX for specialized images.
