Chicago, IL, October 2, 2012 – Calumet Photographic is proud to announce that they will be hosting an exhibit of David Gremp's "Family Run" photographic project in their gallery located in their Chicago retail facility at 1111 N, Cherry Ave. The work will be on display from October 8 through October 28, and there will be an artist reception on October 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. The gallery space is open to the public during regular store hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, 12 to 5 p.m.

David Gremp photographed small family-owned-and-operated businesses between 1976 and 1980, eventually traveling through 35 states to seek out a wide variety of businesses, from grocers, bakers and hardware stores, to farmers, funeral homes and shipbuilders. These environmental portraits were all taken with a 5 x 7" film camera, which creates a sense of formality and seriousness to the images. "My intention was to show a sense of family pride and independence that comes with being your own boss," said Gremp.

Earlier this year, with a successful Kickstarter.com pledge drive, Gremp produced a book, from his images, titled Family Run. The Calumet exhibit will feature work from the book and books will be available for sale at the opening. Gremp will also be giving a presentation of his work and project at the Filter Festival in Chicago on Friday, October 19, from 2 to 4 p.m.

"We are very excited to be able to share this project with our customers," said Laura Dervin, Calumet's Event Marketing Manager. "David has worked in our marketing department for over 30 years, and we now have a gallery space that can showcase this important work."

This is the second photo exhibit to be mounted in Calumet Chicago's new gallery space, which adjoins their retail space. "By presenting work by local photographers that we feel is exciting, fresh and creative," said Dervin, "we hope to inspire our diverse range of customers, and give back to the photo community a sense of what we are all trying to accomplish through our images — self expression."

Gremp will be present at the artist reception on October 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. and refreshments will be served.
